Y2K Cultural Creatives Outreach Project

Market researcher Paul Ray reports that 24% of U.S. adults are "Cultural Creatives" -- people with strong social and environmental values. They are interested in personal development and spiritual/psychological issues, and leading edge ideas in human and natural sciences and other fields (although they aren't fascinated by technology, per se; they tend to use sufficient technology for their needs, but not pursue it for its own sake). They think systemically more readily than most Americans and they do community volunteer or social change work or act in other conscious, socially responsible ways. These qualities make them ideal as early adopters of Y2K-breakthrough understandings, and as early organizers of community and societal responses to Y2K. They can effectively be reached through certain organizations, media and leaders. Alerting these organizations, media and leaders to the Y2K crisis may the highest-leverage action we could take to further the Y2K-breakthrough agenda.

A group of us (including Paul Ray) are currently working to identify as many of these organizations, media and leaders as possible. Then we will reach out to those we are personally connected to. However, this task is obviously far too large for any one person or group. So I am posting on my web site our list of cultural creative organizations, media and leaders as we identify them. Please pick 1-10 of these organizations or people (or any others) that you are associated with, and communicate with them about preparing for Y2K problems and opportunities, using the materials on this site. If 1000 people communicate to one organization, that's fine! We want to do this as broadly and as intensively as we can. As part of this project, we will also speak to friends and associates and encourage them to contact any such organizations they're related to, and to suggest such actions to their friends and associates, etc....

Among the steps needed in this project are:
  1. Create an evolving list of cultural creative organizations, leaders, media
  2. Supply contact information for them
  3. Communicate to them about Y2K-related dangers and opportunities and the need to prepare. A form letter or "open letter" to unnamed roles is better than nothing, but it is far better for a person actually related in some way to the organization or leader to communicate a message that is customized to their special perspectives and needs.
  4. Get others to do steps 1-3
  5. Post sample letters people have written to such groups, leaders or media, to make it easier for other people to do the same

Below is a first attempt to list organizations/people that I (Tom Atlee) know of. It is only a beginning. If you know how to contact them and/or have other ideas for groups or people to contact, let us know (cii@igc.apc.org). If you contact such groups or people, send us a copy of what you say. We'll post model letters or contact-stories we think will be useful to other people doing this project.

I will try to update this project page at least once a week.
