Maclean's-Canadian TV "People's Accord" Documentary

Parts 5 and 6

In 1991 Maclean's magazine convened a dialogue among 12 Canadians who represented the diversity of Canada, an initiative they entitled "The People's Verdict". Canadian TV filmed the entire two-and-a-half day interaction and then wove highlights into an hour-long special edition of their regular public affairs program W5 which they dubbed "The People's Accord". Below you will find that program in its six parts with the advertisements clipped out.

Note that the documentary followed the same pattern used in the Maclean's coverage: quickly profiling the participants at the start and then displaying their struggles and ultimate co-creative resolution. This narrative trajectory enabled/invited millions of viewers to vicariously experience this different kind of conversation and its power in dealing with normally divisive public issues. It helped trigger months of conversation around Canada and offers us guidance in how to magnify the impact of such "minipublic" conversations up to society-wide scale.
