Factors of Co-intelligence: A Checklist
(long and short forms)
The lists below are an attempt to enumerate some of the many factors
involved in how co-intelligent something is. But even the long
list is not complete. No such list could be. However, both lists
cover a considerable amount of co-intelligence territory and,
as such, provide useful frameworks for exploring the details of
this subject. They can be used to better understand and evaluate
co-intelligence in any activity or approach -- whether real or
imaginary. They can guide efforts to actually increase co-intelligence
in specific instances. They can also be used simply to gain insights
of a general nature, without reference to any specific example.
The structure of the lists below follows the following definition
of co-intelligence:
Intelligence
which arises out of, embodies, supports or uses
Wholeness,
Interconnectedness
and
Co-creativity.
In the checklists below, each emphasized element above is broken
down into many factors. Note that these elements and the factors
listed under them are all intimately related. The placement of
factors is somewhat arbitrary and quite arguable. In any case,
the long list covers more ground, while the short list is more
convenient. Use whichever one is more comfortable and useful to
you at any given time.
As you read over the lists, if you find the long list difficult
to embrace, try using the short list. However, if you find the
long list interesting, by all means use that one. You may wish
to go back and forth -- using one, then the other, depending on
your need at different times. You can also create lists of your
own, perhaps based on these, whose length, content and organization
you find more suitable for you than either of the lists below.
There's nothing holy about any such lists: they are only as "true"
or "valuable" as they are useful to you, for your purposes.
If you decide to add other factors or subfactors, or have questions
or insights about this list, by all means let us know.

- mindfulness
- center-based logic; prototype semantics (things defined not
by their boundaries, but by their central essences or prototypes,
becoming less and less absolute as they depart from their central
essence)
- intercentricity, interiority (everything has an infinite
insideness -- not as in anatomy, but as in consciousness -- and
all things are connected center-to-center, as in the Hindu greeting
"Namaste.")

of that whole)

ferns and branches)
holistic dynamics / energies
- balance
- synergy -- the whole is greater/different than the sum of
its parts
- holergy -- a part is greater/different than its role in any
particular whole

being a part of that particular whole

All four
the spiral of evolving coherence
- 1. coherence: an established order, whose inevitable incompleteness
leads to:
- 2. divergence
- 2a. emergence (of something new, usually with some dissonance)
- 2b. differentiation (so it is a clearly identifiable phenomenon)
- 3. convergence
- 3a. acceptance and inclusion (of new element as a legitimate
factor)
- 3b. integration into a new, higher-order coherence
- [Re-start at #1 with new coherence, to start next cycle in
the spiral]
creative use of diversity (some types of diversity listed below)
- demographics (races, genders, ages, class, etc.)(frequent
oppression issues)
- perspectives, experiences, histories, information, opinions,
approaches
- life situations, or stakeholder positions (relationships
to the issue at hand)
- personalities
- communication styles
- learning styles, intelligence profiles
- values, assumptions, beliefs, expectations
- needs, desires, interests, passions, visions, goals
- cultures, ethnicities
- abilities, gifts, strengths
- developmental stages
- roles, functions, statuses
- sizes, structures, operating patterns (of organizations or
other collectives)
- facets of a situation, issue, or subject
dialogue
- presence, authenticity, centeredness
- respect, valuing each perspective
- participation: making sure everyone has a fair chance to
speak
- listening (including as generative/aware silence; and attending
to what's unsaid)
- communication that's not one-way linear
- it's responsive and/or
- it's towards (or out of) a shared topic, intention or center
- shared exploration towards greater shared understanding,
connection and possibility
- emergence of new "third way" insights, solutions,
possibilities unseen by any participant prior to the dialogue;
requires holding our perspectives lightly
- open-ended sensibility
self-organization - (It happens regardless, but not always
in ways we like. Self-organization that pleases the participants
tends to happen naturally to the extent all the above factors
are present. It can be helped along with the following two additional
factors:)
- know-how and capacity for co-intelligence
- eldership (leadership toward the capacity for co-intelligent
self-organization)
